A Kitchen Incantation /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Bread a-mixing, bread a-kneading
Like a story often told
Song we never tire of tasting
Ever-new and ever-old

Fire lends us heat for baking
From the earth, the wheat and oil
Animals offer and milk and eggs
We must give our hope and toil

There’s proportion to creation
Grammar in each recipe
In the kitchen, inspiration’s
Sharpened by necessity

Bread a-browning, bread a-rising
Fills the kitchen with its breath
Comes triumphant from the oven
Like the Love that conquers death

O Bread, from whom all bread is given
Make this loaf of bread to be
Part and foretaste of the Meal
We in heaven share with Thee
