The Ancient Modern

Closed /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

I have never searched
never risked the crossing
never cut my fingers digging through stones

Kings are dead
and religion is dead
and installed at the back of my skull

is a port for ships
I cannot see, whose cargo
I cannot see, whose effects I cannot predict

Should I protest?
Should I give grammar
to the questions fighting to escape me?

I am not a scientist
I lack the credentials to speak
Strength to tear away the wires has atrophied

because I never searched
because I never risked the crossing
never cut my fingers digging through stones
