The Ancient Modern

Hellenic Haiku  /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Who doesn’t envy
the Greeks?  They still live and walk
among their Heroes.

Their words, the capstones
from Athena’s shrines, re-cut
and set in the hearths

of their island homes.
These stones still sing for the ears
of listening poets.

Who wouldn’t envy
the Greeks? Ancient Memory! Grieved
but undefeated,

bold as Heracles;
their Music as sharp, yet more
subtle than their Fire
