The Ancient Modern

Out of Courtesy /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Out of deference, I lend
a little ear.
But sight I send
on errands out or in
             to find
where center is periphery
where heart is mind.

Out of courtesy, I make
a little bow, not insincere
to culture, politics, technology.
             But here

where you might recognize
             a face
isn’t where a self is anchored.
Even as we speak,
I’m sailing
past the sea of conversation
to that Great Embrace.
