Seven Sea Haiku  /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

secret sea-promise
elusive
          as ecstasy:
somewhere an island

life phantasmic, life
inversed — of
          blood without breath
of flesh without bones

ocean paths twined like
handmade lace
          only mother’s
mothers remember

silver pearls fall
from a blue ship
          with white sails
so to sea, the rain

before he vanished
his boat
          had long been followed
by cold, lightless eyes

the sun calls brightly
but can never
          awaken
these undreaming depths

I saw her and cried
such grief!
          — infinite beauty
unreachably far
