The Ancient Modern

The Trees /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Do you wish to tend the Earth?
Ask the trees.
Their roots embrace the stones, unseen.

Do you want the Sun to warm you?
Ask the trees.
His light is caught in the embrace of leaves.

Can you reply to Love’s invitations?
Ask the trees.
When God divided lands from seas

and called creation to grow and to be,
who answered the summons first?
          The trees
