The Unpuzzling / Joshua Alan Sturgill
It’s been a year
since the sweetgum and the pecan
swaying in the summer blaze
were two women
telling each other
in a strange language a secret
in that instant
before they saw me looking
and went back to being trees.
It’s been a year
of forgetting and remembering
but today
as the sky sizzled under a humid wind
I realized all along
in the silence that lives under thought\
I’d been patiently deciphering
unpuzzling what they said
so I was not surprised
when their secret rose out of me
whole and perfectly clear
