The Ancient Modern

Brief As Memory /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

brief as human memory
the rain

lately insufficient, falls
among the weeds

.  I nervously wait
as they come in, always

wrapped, marked
emails, packages

a machine takes them
into my bed

pay into the system
as you must

.  Life escapes
into corners of the lawn

the spurge thrives
the groundsel spreads

.  We forget; we fail to stop
dividing

types, politics, charges
pressure (from somewhere)

builds.  There are no hybrid
dandelions
