The Ancient Modern

Castles /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Castles, Castles, Castles
of the faces in the sky
Castles of skilled minds
morning and evening Castles
Castles of contempt
Castles of self-offering
Castles of the gas chambers
coffin Castles, creation Castles
Castles of sleeping dragons
Castles of the loyalty of dogs
the long walk Castles, the patient Castles
lace and linen Castles
Castles of the contests of lion cubs
Castles in the ammonia ice clouds of Jupiter
Castles of sunspots and solar flares
Castles of beets and leeks and radishes
Castles of the burnt shells of cities
Castles of the lonely woman gathering sticks
to tend her hearth
Castles in the blue and gold ceilings
of Russian cathedrals
faded friendship Castles
Castles where a lover waits
Castles without windows, Castles of glass
Castles of the displaced and disinherited
Castles where the murderer and his victim are reconciled
Castles of purgation
dimensionless Castles built of bricks of time
Castles in a quiet living room
Castles abandoned, broken, unaccounted
the Castles in a beam of light
Castles balanced on a blade of grass
Castles anchored to the ocean floor
Castles, Castles, Castles
like dandelion plumes drifting
lazily out of everywhere
