The Ancient Modern

Prayer and Germination  /  Joshua Alan Sturgill

Seed. Soil. Season:
a micro-universe
where conditions may favor
the revelation of an instance
of onions.

If I were
a wiser man (one
of the ancient race),
I would know the Law
of Germination

requires prayer
as well as preparation:
Care over the seed,
blessing of earth, patience
with the sky.

O God of the Garden,
(I might call) I have made
a house for onions here.
Bring them down
from Your pastures

of possibility.  Bid them dress
in root and bulb and enter.
I will honor them with hand
and eye and teeth. And when
I am answered, I make

from the blessing
more doors, more wombs,
more instances of onions.
And my hungry soul is satisfied
with living food
